Day 6 Trailing Back Grand Canyon to Albuquerque

Writer's picture: Terese and ThomasTerese and Thomas

Travel days from here until the final destination. We have officially put the hiking boots in the car and rerouted the trip. Albuquerque NM to Clinton OK to Little Rock, AR to Cookesville, TN to Roanoke, VA to our new home. Also, if you have been reading the blog you know that it has now been 6 days without a shower (TMI?), so you won't be surprised to hear that we are in a Marriott Residence Inn in Albuquerque where we will get 2 showers before we leave tomorrow. And take out! Who knew life could be so exciting?

Thank you to my two good friends who had the foresight to gift us "travel meals". Gourmet fare made for backpackers who like the creature comforts. Those will sustain us for three of the dinners. When I planned meals I brought lots of beans and rice and great spices to make delicious home cooked meals. I'm a soak and cook my own beans kind of cook. When we came out east the first time with Hilary and Nate, Hilary brought her Instant Pot which soaks and cooks all at once. But she has that Instant Pot awaiting our arrival in Alexandria. I realized shortly into the trip that I could not soak my beans while we drove which means my dried beans are useless on this trip. So, take out tonight, beans that I will soak and cook in the hotel tomorrow night and fancy backpacking dinners to finish off the three final nights. And in case you think I am inflating the gourmet-ness of the backpacking meals...Pad Thai with shrimp, Indian curried vegetables and asparagus risotto with lemon peel. You are wishing you were eating with us, aren't you?

We are listening to "Gone With The Wind" while we drive. It took us a few days to settle into what we should listen to. We tried comedy on Sirius but it was hit or miss. We tried our many playlists on Spotify but we got tired of those. We had downloaded the book on Hamilton that was the inspiration for the musical but Thomas is studying the Civil War so we decided to try "Gone With The Wind". It is actually 44 hours long so we will still have about 15 hours left on it when we arrive. Luckily, we know how it ends.

It seems to be all falling into place. After all those months the plan is happening. Our new bed and mattress arrived a few weeks ago (we had the same bed and mattress for 29 years and it was a queen!). The movers will arrive with our stuff on December 9 and Nate, ex-mover extraordinaire, will manage the placement of all our furniture and boxes. We will arrive on December 11 with a few extra days to get settled. And then we begin the new life. Whatever that is will just have to unfold. One thing I know to be true; I cannot wait to have Tala crawl to me!

The new bed in the new bedroom. Finally a king!
