Day 1 Trailing Back Santa Clara to Paso Robles 164 miles

Writer's picture: Terese and ThomasTerese and Thomas

Startin' out easy. We said good-bye to Covid house in Santa Clara a little after 11:00 this morning and landed in the Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles around 2:00. Since we are pros now, setting up Nessie was a breeze. Speaking of breeze this trip promises to be quite cooler than our summer sojourn. It is 4:24 and I am starting to shiver as I sit outside under the awning writing this blog post. But if you have ever seen the inside of Nessie you know that I can sit outside in a comfortable chair or I can sit on the bed, but those are the only choices. So I choose to shiver a little right now. Need to enjoy California weather for a few more days...

Turns out that saying good-bye is very hard. These last three and a half months since we decided to move life has been busy with regular life and good-bye life alternating within the day. Regular life reminds us that everything is going to be pretty much the same; we will work at our jobs and we will enjoy our downtime in the same ways we always have. Good-bye life reminds us that nothing is the same. Regular life and good-bye life offer alternating feelings as well. Recently we looked at each other and said "let's just go because this is just too hard". So here I sit (the wind stopped so no shivering right now) feeling excited about seeing our kids and having an adventure with my eyes welling up at inconvenient intervals.

Later that same evening...we just finished our dinner of cowboy beans and quinoa. Camping food but delicious nonetheless. We have a dearth of fresh produce since we are planning to subsist on the food we are bringing with us. Last night we had a giant salad to prepare our systems for the upcoming 2 weeks that will lack green leafy vegetables. Tomorrow perhaps we will ration out a few of our frozen peas to add some color to the meal. Now Thomas is trying to figure out why the water heater isn't working and after that we will settle in to watch one of our all time favorite "feel good" movies ~ "My Cousin Vinny". Hmm, it's about being arrested on a road trip through the south and asking your relative from the northeast who is a lawyer to come plead your case in court. Hopefully not a sign of things to come...

Tomorrow Death Valley. We have both lived our whole lives in California and never been to Death Valley. We have clearly taken for granted our experience of California and of all the friends and family we are leaving. It is reckoning time.

Good-bye Covid House

On our way...
